Forage Management Strategies for Diseased Horses

January 20, 2016 @7:00 pm-9:00 pm

Not all diets are created equal! In this lecture, you will learn from one of the nation’s leading equine nutritionists, Krishona Martinson, about her latest research on forage management strategies for horses prone to laminitis, obesity and/or metabolic syndrome including grazing low carbohydrate forages, use of  grazing muzzles, slow feed-hay nets, hay steamers, soaking hay, and new bodyweight and ideal bodyweight estimation equations for multiple breeds of horses including warmbloods, drafts, stock horses, Arabians and ponies.

Krishona Martinson was raised on a farm in Colfax, Wisconsin and earned her B.S.  M.S. and Ph.D. in Agronomy.  Since 2008, she has been the Equine Extension Specialist in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota.  Her applied research program focuses on improving equine forage utilization.  Dr. Martinson has published over 30 journal articles and has secured over $1.1 million in grant funding.  In 2011, she was awarded the Equine Science Society (ESS) Outstanding Young Professional Award and currently serves on the ESS Board of Directors.  She lives in Minnesota with her husband and daughters and shows horses in local speed events and raises Hereford beef cattle.
