Basic Abdominal Small Animal Ultrasound Lab

November, 2019

Agnes Varis Auditorium

CE Credits - Lectures and Hands-on Scanning

About The Symposium

The Basic Abdominal Small Animal Ultrasound Lab includes short presentations intersecting with phantom and animal labs.  The presentations are designed to familiarize the participants with:

  • the use of ultrasound equipment (knobology)
  • the most common scanning methods to best evaluate an organ
  • normal ultrasonographic examination of most abdominal structures

Created for veterinarians interested in applying ultrasound examination in their daily practice but who have no or little experience with ultrasound.

Upon completion of the lab participants will :

  • gain knowledge of the main components of an ultrasound unit and how to use it
  • enhance baseline confidence to perform an abdominal ultrasound exam and recognize normal organs, following simple guidelines.

Veterinarians are also welcome to invited technicians within their practices to attend.

Learning objectives:

  • How does ultrasound work: the basics?
  • How to get optimal images and video clips of organs
  • How to navigate through organs (orientation planes-terminology-knobology)
  • How to recognize the normal appearance of liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, prostate will be emphasized in both presentations and labs. (GI tract, pancreas and adrenal glands will be primarily covered in presentations.)
  • Principles of interpretation will be approached to define the limit between normal and abnormal organs.
